President João Lourenço (Angola) at the Washington Accords Signing Ceremony December 4, 2025

President João Lourenço (Angola) at the Washington Accords Signing Ceremony December 4, 2025

Your Excellency President Trump, dear guests and dignitaries,

Importance of the Ceremony

  • This event in Washington ends a conflict lasting over 30 years between neighboring countries, with severe impacts on people, economies, and the resource-rich Great Lakes region (water, arable land, forests, minerals).

Regional and Global Benefits

  • The signed peace deal will:
  • Benefit the entire region immensely
  • Unleash continental development opportunities
  • Help address global food and energy crises

  • The Great Lakes region can supply vital resources worldwide (e.g., the Grand Inga hydro project for electrification and agricultural growth).

Acknowledgment and Next Steps

  • Nothing justified this war, but the key is that it has ended.

  • African nations (Angola, Kenya, others) tried but could not succeed alone.

  • We thank President Trump for achieving this milestone.

  • We now appeal to the DRC and Rwanda to implement the agreement fully for the benefit of their people and the continent.

Thank you very much.
